Microneedling

The body produces collagen to keep the skin firm, smooth, and elastic. During the course of aging, collagen production slows down and we begin to lose elasticity in the skin. Collagen is a structural protein that acts as a scaffold for the skin, so as we age, our skin begins to sag and wrinkle, causing the classic signs of aging.  Fortunately, the body is still capable of renewing collagen and other essential compounds of the skin with the right stimulation.  By encouraging our skin to regenerate and produce more collagen, this service allows the skin on your face to look firmer and more youthful. It effectively reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, and acne scarring.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy.  It is a minimally invasive procedure that  effectively rejuvenates the skin.  It helps reduce the signs of aging by improving texture and firmness.  It can also reduce the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks.  The treatment works by creating tiny punctures in the top skin layer. These micro-needles trigger the skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage.  Microneedling results in the controlled induction of new collagen and elastin synthesis in the skin. The result is smoother, firmer and younger looking skin. It’s an ideal approach for treating:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Crow’s feet
  • Sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Stretch marks
  • Acne scars

What is the SkinPen difference?

SkinPen by Bellus Medical is the only class II microneedling device cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), clinically proven to safely and effectively treat facial acne scars for ages 22 and up.
Some microneedling devices work as “rollers” and can cause micro-tears in the skin leading to greater superficial skin trauma.  In addition, devices that lack uniformity of needles can develop jagged or bent needle tips over the course of the treatment that would also create tears in the skin.  Due to these concerns, we do not recommend use of home or non-FDA cleared devices.

What is the cost of Microneedling?

Microneedling costs vary based on your specific treatment goals and other services you may also undergo. We will discuss the cost of microneedling with you during your consultation, and our team is always available to help establish a payment plan that works for you.

What to expect after microneedling?

You may notice skin irritation and redness within the first few days following the procedure. This is a natural response to the small “injuries” made by the needles in your skin.

You can go back to work or school after the procedure if you’re comfortable.  We ask that you avoid make-up during the first 24 hours when the skin channels are most open. Your skin will also be more sensitive to the sun, so sunscreen is a must.

What is PRP (platelet Rich Plasma)?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy uses the patient’s own blood as a form of regenerative medicine
Plasma is the liquid portion of whole blood. Platelets are cells found in the bloodstream that allow blood to clot. When a clot is formed, platelets emit enzymes that boost healing and aid in tissue regeneration. They contain important growth factors and cytokines that stimulate the immune system, drawing stem cells to the area to help repair damage.
The clinician will withdraw a sample of the patient’s blood. The blood sample is then placed in a centrifuge, which is a machine that spins the blood sample very quickly in order to separate the blood into its different components. Then, the now isolated, concentrated plasma is used in target areas.

Is micro-needling safe for dark skin?
Unlike many skin treatments that carry risks of skin discoloration, micro-needling is safe for all skin types, and can be a great skin rejuvenation technique for darker skin.
How long will I have to wait to see results?
Although each patient’s skin heals differently, most patients will begin to notice visible from their microneedling treatments just a few days to a week following treatment.Since the body does all the work repairing the skin after micro-needling treatments, results begin to appear gradually. Patients can expect to see some results right away, with more defined improvement occurring in the weeks following treatment, and after subsequent sessions. Microneedling treatments are performed one month apart, with approximately three to six treatments in total to receive optimal results.
Will the treatment hurt?
Topical anesthesia is used prior to treatment to minimize (or even eliminate) any pain and discomfort from the micro-needling process. Most patients do not experience any discomfort during the treatment.
What to expect during microneedling
During your microneedling treatment, your provider will start by cleaning any residual make-up or oils from the skin. We will then apply an anesthetic cream to your skin, to ensure your comfort during treatment 30 minutes prior to the procedure. A light layer of serum is used to lubricate your skin in the target area. The depth of the needles is adjusted to the specific goals of your treatment.
The actual treatment lasts about 15-20 minutes, depending on the area you’re targeting. Afterward, you may experience skin redness, which will fade over the following days. Most patients require 3-6 treatments, each spaced a month apart, depending on their target area and goals.
Is there anyone who should not undergo microneedling?
Anyone with active infection, skin cancer lesions, or active herpes lesions in the treatment area should not undergo this treatment.
It is not recommended for anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding.
